Police Chief

The City of Frankfort, Kentucky is seeking applications from individuals interested in the position of Police Chief.  Position is responsible for directing, planning, organizing, evaluating, managing and overseeing the activities and operations relating to the Police Department, to provide continuous security for the City.

Qualifications:  Applicants are required to possess a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver’s license and a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Administration or related field. Ten years of experience in law enforcement, including five years increasingly responsible administrative/supervisory experience in law enforcement.  Graduate level education in a law enforcement related field will substitute for the non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis. Must have completed required law enforcement basic training or equivalent, and must complete required in-service training each year. Graduate of advanced police studies program such as FBI or SPI is preferred. 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Formulates departmental operating policies and procedures, following consultation with higher authority and subordinate officers.
  • Plans, directs and evaluates all activities and programs of the Police Department.  Monitors work schedules; insures that accurate time and personnel records are prepared and maintained.
  • Furnishes technical advice on police problems.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of criminal and traffic reports in addition to activity reports; initiates corrective action when and where indicated.
  • Supervises and evaluates the use and maintenance of departmental equipment.
  • Formulates and enforces operating policies and procedures; and instructs, disciplines and evaluates departmental employees.
  • Assists in recruiting, selection, promotion and training of departmental personnel.
  • Prepares and administers departmental budget; authorizes purchase requisitions of supplies and equipment for the department within established limits; and monitors external funding sources; prepares applications for funding; administers projects.
  • Confers with representatives of federal, state and local agencies on various police issues. 
  • Prepares memoranda and reports on activities of the department; supervises others in report preparation.
  • Handles complaints from the general public.
  • Reviews all laws, official opinions and guidelines with reference to police activities and summarizes for departmental personnel.
  • Responds to all major calls and takes command at the scene; may make arrests; may issue court citations; appears in court as necessary.
  • Insures that accurate records pertaining to citations, arrests and investigations are prepared and maintained.
  • Participates in law enforcement courses and insures that subordinates are scheduled for such training.
  • Represents the department as needed.
  • Attends all Commission meetings; reports to the executive and legislative branches as requested.
  • Develops and conducts effective public relations programs.

Transit Driver — Seasonal

The City of Frankfort is accepting applications for the position of Transit Driver.  Duties include working with the public and staff; driving a bus on either a designated route, a time schedule or on demand. Insures safe operating condition of bus and reports maintenance items to the Garage. Transports passengers; issues and collects tickets and transfers; prepares and maintains accurate logs and reports; and other duties as assigned.  Must be physically able to assist riders with boarding and/or exiting the bus, and able to inspect and clean the bus.

Minimum Requirements:
Commonwealth of Kentucky Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)is desired.    If candidate does not have a CDL, it must be obtained within three months of hire.  A CDL passenger endorsement is preferred, but not required.

Education: Must be a High School or Equivalent.

Experience: Preference may be given to those with bus driving experience and a safe driving record.

We offer a competitive starting salary of $15.78 per hour.

Animal Control Officer – Part Time

The City of Frankfort seeks qualified applicants for the position of Animal Control Officer.  Under general supervision, performs animal control to include apprehending vicious, vagrant, or unlicensed animals; investigates animal complaints; inspects missing or damaged road signs; markers, lights, etc.  Performs backup parking enforcement and school crossing guard activities.  May perform light hauling for police.  Performs related work as required.

Requirements of Position:

Education:  High School graduate or equivalent.

Experience:  Some experience in handling and care of animals. 

Rate of Pay:  $16.00 per hour.  

Special Requirements:  Must be willing to work variable hours.  Hours are anticipated to be one of the options listed below.  Exact schedule to be confirmed upon hire.

M – F 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
M – F 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Pump Maintenance Superintendent

The City of Frankfort, Kentucky, seeks qualified applicants for a Pump Maintenance Superintendent position in the Sewer Department.  Position is responsible for supervision and assistance in the maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, pumps and lift stations.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise safe and efficient operation of equipment and perform preventative maintenance, cleaning duties and repairs on equipment;
  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance at wastewater treatment plant, sewage pump stations, flood pump stations and recommends major repairs to be made;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, customers, contractors, and the general public;
  • Prepare and maintain required reports and records;
  • Read and interpret blueprints and engineering/construction documents;
  • Evaluate assigned staff, interviews and recommends hiring for vacancies within the maintenance crew;
  • Handle disciplinary and other personnel actions, approves vacation and sick leave for employees under their supervision;
  • Knowledgeable about the subject matter, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to area of responsibility;
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Requirements of Position:

High School graduate or equivalent.  Vocational school classes in mechanics desired, but not required. Five (5) years of directly related experience or eight (8) years of sewer maintenance/construction experience. Two (2) years of supervisory experience desired.

Must possess and maintain a Commonwealth of Kentucky Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement and air brakes. Must be capable of working periodic overtime. Must be able to respond to call out 24 hours a day. Must meet the minimum requirements of 401 KAR 11.030 and maintain a Class III Wastewater Collection Certification issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky desired.
